Remembering to Remember

The Six heart Virtues – Micro real life practice

On any given day, countless situations arise—someone says something to me (or to someone else), I see something on TV or social media, I get cut off in traffic, I remember the past or anticipate the future. Sparks fly, triggering a cycle of thought.

More thoughts stir emotions, triggering habitual patterns of withdrawal or defense. Survival mode activates and perpetuates itself.

The chain of thoughts holds my attention, and I identify the thoughts as me and my life. It becomes an endless loop of justifying, defense, distraction, and withdrawal from life in the now.

This is familiar to all of us.

But if I can remember to pause and notice that I am lost in thought, I can make a choice. This is the moment—the point of power—to move from a closed loop to an expanding spiral. A little self‑compassion helps carry us forward.

I remember. I choose. I become a conscious co‑creator of a new, emerging future.

Applying the When–Which–How method

  • When: Lost in past or future thoughts; old patterns spike stress; shallow breath; tight shoulders.
  • Which: Humility to recognize my humanness; understanding to settle and see more clearly; appreciation for remembering to remember; compassion for myself.
  • How: Hand to heart. One slow breath. Say, “Thank you for the nudge.” Whisper, “I choose one small, kind step.”

One small pause. One kind choice. A real shift in reality—even if no one notices.

Six Heart Virtues: Appreciation • Compassion • Forgiveness • Humility • Understanding • Valor

Try it today: Name the virtue, take one breath, choose one small act.
